BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships 2018 and the Toni Bajada Swim on the 7th June 2018

The curtain raiser for the BSJ events for 2018 is getting nearer, and it will be one big special occasion. On the 7th June, the traditional date for BSJ to kick-off its now elongated summer season, the national open water swimming championships 2018 will be inaugurated with the first race. This year Malta is celebrating Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture, and Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club is proud to be part of these nationwide celebrations. The Club’s participation will be in the Valletta Pageant of the Seas 2018 programme scheduled for the 7th June, with the first race of the national open water swimming championships, and the second edition of the Toni Bajada Swim. These events will be televised and streamed on line across the world, while thousands of spectators are expected to turn up along the shores of our magnificent Grand Harbour to follow the events. It will be a massive showcase for Maltese open water swimming and a unique experience for the participating swimmers. All swimmers will be presented with a Valletta 18 memento following the Toni Bajada swim.

The two-kilometre swim will be starting at 4:30 p.m. near the Pixkerija slipway at Xatt il-Barriera, Valletta, while the Toni Bajada Swim will be starting from the same place at 7:00 p.m. and will take the swimmers across the harbour and back, commemorating the heroics of Toni Bajada during the Great Siege of 1565.

There will be one entry form for both events (the OWS 2018 form) which applicants may download from the Club’s website. No entry fee will be charged for the Toni Bajada Swim, while the normal fees for the two-kilometre race will be applicable. Applications will be accepted up to 45 minutes before the start of the swim. The presentation ceremony of the race’s medals will be held following the Toni Bajad Swim.

Further information will be issued by the Club as the events’ date gets nearer.
