Birkirkara St. Joseph Open Water Swimming Championships 2017 wraps up

Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club, the pioneer of Open Water Swimming racing in Malta has recently wrapped up another successful championship which has seen over two hundred and thirty swimmers take part in the six races of these championships.  Consisting of five 2-kilometre swims and a 4-kilometre swim held in Salina, the Club has registered substantial participation growth and the sport keeps seeing familiar faces as well as welcoming new ones into the fold.

Whilst a number of swimmers gave notable performances, they were no match for the young Dylan Cachia and Sarah Demicoli, who once again dominated the season throughout.

In the Males Category Dylan Cachia continued his winning streak from last year.  Not only has Cachia managed to keep his top billing but has also consistently registered improved timings from the previous years.  Second placed was Andrew Sultana, who although young has garnered substantial experience in the sport. Third placed Andre Camilleri was in his first foray in this distance having competed in the 1-kilometre races in the previous editions due to age restrictions. Camilleri is fast becoming one to watch with strong and solid performances.

Sarah Demicoli continued to extend her reign in the females’ category.  Demicoli consistently has been one of the top five swimmers in the overall category and has recently been chosen, together with Andrew Sultana,  to be part of the National Open Water Swimming Team.  Second placed Maya Schembri Rodgers has also steadily been improving whilst newcomer Amanda Rapa was the surprise of the season having made her debut in the field this year.

“The Club has been instrumental in developing this sport and its work can be seen not only from the growth in participation but also in the recent setting up of an Open Water Swimming National Team which can be seen as the recognition this sport has achieved by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta” commented Euchar Camilleri, Secretary General, Birkirkara Saint Joseph Sports Club.  He thanked the central administration of the ASA for their continuous support.  Currently both the Association and the Club are discussing the possibility of staging and international event in Malta during summer of 2018.

The Club’s next commitment is the Malta-Gozo-Malta and the Gozo-Malta Open Water Swimming Competitions scheduled to take place on Saturday 26th August. Applications for Registration, together with a medical certificate are to be submitted to the Club by not later than Saturday 12th August. A Meeting for swimmers will be held on Tuesday 22nd August at 7:00 p.m. at the town hall of the Mosta Local Council.
