Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club saw their hopes of championship glory slip agonisingly away as they were pipped by fellow contenders Gzira United by the odd goal in five, in a thrilling championship decider worthy of the occasion.

A shaky start by the Yellows proved fatal, as Gzira went ahead with a brace in the first fifteen minutes of the match.   The Saints conceded two rather soft goals to the delight of the United clan, knowing that only a victory would see them home and dry.  As the game progressed Birkirkara St. Joseph gradually recovered from this sudden setback in such an important encounter. The teams changed sides with Gzira’s two-goal advantage.

In the second half the Yellows reverted to play in the style that brought them so many successful results this season, and Gzira had to retreat to the fast flowing football of their opponents.  However, tragedy struck the Saints in the early stages of this half, as Gzira increased their tally to three against the run of play.  With literally a mountain to climb the Birkirkara side besieged the Maroons’ penalty area and with ten minutes to go, they managed to claw themselves back into the game with two superbly taken goals. The pressure for the all important equaliser, which would have been enough to see the Saints through, was furious and relentless.  However Gzira United managed to hold on by the skin of their teeth, as the final whistle saw them crowned second division league champions 2014/2015.

Birkirkara St. Joseph’s remaining fixture is on the 19 March against Rover United.  A victory for the Yellows in this final match will pit them against the penultimate classified club in the first division table, for a promotion decider.

In a statement, Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club congratulated Gzira United on winning this season’s second division league championship.
