SAINTS MARCH ON - Birkirkara St. Joseph - 2: Mgarr Falcons - 1

Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club gathered all the vital points in a heart-stopping encounter against Mgarr Falcons to keep up the pace at the top of the table, piling pressure on joint contenders Gzira United. The Saints beat the Falcons by two goals to one, following an early scare which saw the Greens go into the lead with a well taken goal.

Forced to field a changed side from the one that saw off Zurrieq Wolves, Clyde Micallef played his cards well and his side reacted by showing tonnes of character.  The Saints' determination soon had the desired effect, as they were again level through a well taken penalty by Clint Zammit.  The first half finished square at 1-1.  Birkirkara St. Joseph were looking the better side in the second half as they started to pile the pressure on their opponents, especially through some very fast counter attacks.  However the clock was ominously ticking away as the Yellows could not break the deadlock, and Mgarr were finding more space in their attacks, as the Saints surged frantically forward.  In their only attempt of this period, Mgarr rattled the crossbar as Saints hearts stopped beating. It was the long awaited turning point of the match.  Birkirkara St. Joseph reacted with force missing a couple of good chances thanks to miraculous feats by the Mgarr custodian. However the jinx was broken with just a few minutes to spare, as Claudio Formosa sent the Yellow clan to cloud nine with a cool tap into the back of the net, following a melee in the six-yard box.

The Yellows are now poised and in the right gear for the final sprint.  Barring any mishaps in the next match against Zabbar Crystal Blues, next in line will be the showdown against Gzira United.  A victory against the Maroons will see the Saints almost home and dry in their final match against the Rovers of Valletta.

Gzira United beat Zabbar Crystal Blues by a goal to nil, to stay at the top of the table with a game in hand.
