The Agones SFC first race of the Mulitsport Series on Sunday 18th January was the curtain raiser to the local multisport calendar. The race was a draft legal duathlon held at Hal Safi. For the first time this year the race carried points for the Triathlete of the Year award, thus attracted all the top triathletes on the island. The race consisted of a 4.5km run, an 18km bike and finished with another 2.5km run.

Race favourite Keith Galea of Birkirkara St. Joseph, went immediately into the lead trying to build a good lead from the beginning of the first run. He covered the 4.5km in 15 minutes 33 seconds. He was followed by team-mate Steve Chetcuti, making his return to the sport, and Agones’ Fabio Spiteri who reached T1 16 seconds later. BSJ’S current Duathlon champion tried hard to keep his lead on the bike, however, out front on his own was difficult for the Saints' champion, in the prevailing windy conditions. Steve Chetcuti’s technical advantage of being with Spiteri, was crucial for the leader to be caught.  Conscious of his disadvantage, Galea opted to join his rivals’ group.

At one stage, Galea decided not to work with the other two to rest his legs for the ensuing run, knowing pretty well that he was the fastest in the run and that no one was going to catch the three leaders. Chetcuti, who was struggling to keep up the pace, managed to just hang on. The Agones triathlete tried various attacks in order to get away from the two Saints, however the BSJ champion was very vigilant as he followed all Spiteri’s moves and at the same time helping his team-mate to get back in the group.

In the final lap, Galea made his winning move. In the last 500 metres he surged into a strong attack to which the other two could not react in time and managed to be the first into T2. After a very fast transition, the champion had a good lead at the start of the final run, whilst the other two were still held up in transition area. Galea continued to push till the end increasing his lead significantly. He went on to win the race in 55 minutes, 15 seconds. Fellow BSJ triathlete Chetcuti managed to out-sprint Spiteri in the final 500 metres to grab second place for himself and his Club, in a time of 55 minutes, 41 seconds. Spiteri was third in 55 minutes, 58 seconds.

Contacted after the race, Galea was very pleased with his performance. He explained how at the moment he was focusing a lot on his running, so he could not sat that he is really in his top form in multisport events. He is pleased that his winning move in the last part of the bike worked as he managed to come in first in T2, and following a fast transition, he built an unassailable lead to chalk his first win of the season.

BSJ’s Steve Chetcuti made a fantastic return to the sport with his solid performance, second only to his steam-mate champion’s.  His hard work and training regime proved to be vital, as his racing prowess returned with a vengeance following long months on the side line. His satisfaction after the race was very evident as he is now looking forward to achieving more positive results in this new season.

BSJ’s multisport champion, Keith Galea who is under the KMS’ Flexi Training Scheme would like to thank his sponsors Garmin Malta, Jaycee Malta, BBB Bike Parts Malta, Starbene 24/7, Malta Challenge Marathon, the Malta Triathlon Federation, his Club Birkirkara St Joseph, the Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport and the Maltese Olympic Committee for the constant support.
