SAINTS STAY TOP IN DRAMATIC WIN - Zurrieq Wolves - 1: Birkirkara St. Joseph - 2

A match that Birkirkara St. Joseph should have wrapped up in the first ten minutes against Zurrieq Wolves turned into a dramatic encounter with the Saints winning with the odd goal in three. Conscious of main rivals Gzira United’s victory over Mgarr Falcons earlier on in the day, the Saints had to win to keep the momentum at the top going. They did in dramatic fashion to turn the championship to look more like a two-horse race, with a five-point gap between the top two teams and their rivals.

Birkirkara St. Joseph line-up against Zurrieq Wolves

Zurrieq Wolves were the only club to inflict a defeat on the Saints in the first round, in what was arguably the best performance of the latter this season. With the top spot and revenge on their minds, Birkirkara St. Joseph started to dictate matters from the start, and they could have taken the encounter beyond the Wolves at the very early stages, had they converted the chances they created against their stunned opponents.  However they took a deserved lead in the 14th minute in a fast move started from deep inside their own half.  By this time the Saints were cruising, but then proceedings took a dramatic turn  A cross from the left resulted in the Wolves’ equaliser, in which action the Saints goalkeeper had to be replaced following a nasty injury to the knee.

The second half was a high tension affair, with both sides pressing for the winning goal.  The Saints managed to maintain the edge, and in the 51st minute they broke through to go in the lead, to the relief of the Yellow clan.
