Three times Malta Triathlon Champion, Keith Galea of Birkirkara St. Joseph stepped up his fine form by winning the Gatorade Mellieha Duathlon in style. With this performance Galea made his intentions of challenging for honours very clear victory, particularly in his quest to win back the forthcoming duathlon championships.

This sprint duathlon was organised by Mellieha AC at Dingli cliffs and consisted of a five-kilometre run, a 20-kilometre bike and a 2.5-kilometre run. The Saint went into the lead from the very first stages of the race by setting a very fast pace. His rivals could not react to this punishing pace which saw him reaching the first transition in 16 minutes, 50 seconds.  In the 20-kilometre bike segment of the race Galea further increased his lead, knowing pretty well the prowess of his team-mate Wayne Spiteri in this segment.

Galea managed to reach transition area with a lead of 20 seconds on Spiteri and one minute on  foreign triathlete Backstrom.   However none of the two could match the champion’s fast running pace as he covered the final 2.5 kilometres in 8 minutes to register his third victory of the season in  58 minutes, 31 seconds, a new course record by 7 minutes. Wayne Spiteri managed to make it a one-two for Birkirkara St. Joseph, finishing second in 59 minutes, 13 seconds. Backstrom came home in third place in 59 minutes, 40 seconds.

Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Michelle Vella Wood finished the race in second place one minute, 26seconds behind winner, Danica Bonello Spiteri of St. Patrick’s A.C. Magret Seguna of Mellieha AC finished in third place.

Contacted by, Galea was visibly happy with his performance. Duathlons are not his forte but this result shows that he is in a very good shape and he is looking forward for the Duathlon Championships in May, and reclaim the crown he has lost last year due to an injury. The fast pace he sustained throughout the race makes his intentions of challenging for the honours very clear.
