Earlier on this afternoon, Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club was engaged in meetings with Transport Malta architects and contractors in connection with the imminent closure of the Coast Road in connection with the infrastructural work to be carried out on this stretch of road, which for the past couple of decades has been the main sporting venue for the sports of triathlon and cycling.

With immediate effect, the recreational area at Salina, used as the transition area in triathlon, will be fenced off to house the site offices of the various contractors.  To this end, the Club site office will have to be either moved in the coming days or else the Club will have no access to it.   Works, expected to last 13 months up to May 2015, will be carried out on the inland side of the Coast Road, during which period the Coast Road will be reduced to two lanes.  With the Coast Road narrowed drastically, the open spaces taken up by the contractors, and works to go ahead seven days a week, triathlon and in all probability open water swimming events will have to be moved to a different location.  The same should apply to any cycling events.  Transport Malta will be forwarding an updated site-plan of the Coast Road project to the Club, in the coming days.

In the circumstances Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club will soon be convening a meeting of all the stake holders to plan the way forward for the sport of triathlon, at least for the forthcoming season.  Any developments in this regard will be communicated on this website.  Due to health and safety issues, Transport Malta officials advised the Club to instruct its members and everybody else, to refrain from cycling on the Coast Road during the progress of the works.
