Galea Shines in Malta Half Marathon 2014

Malta Triathlon Champion Keith Galea produced a great performance in last Sunday’s Malta Half Marathon. The Birkirkara St. Joseph triathlete started the race at a steady pace together with Athleta Pembroke’s Richard Chetcuti thus leading the Maltese males' race. Seven kilometres into the race, Agones’ Charlie Cilia and Athleta Pembroke’s Mark Herrera caught up with the two leading men. At the half way point, Cilia increased the pace. The two Athleta Pembroke runners could not react to Cilia’s pace and it was left for Galea to chase the pace-setter.

In the last stages of the race, both Galea and Cilia made their moves but none of them was ready to throw the towel, until at some 500 metres from the finish Cilia opened his final sprint to be the first Maltese to cross the finish line in one hour, 12 minutes, 30 seconds. Galea finished second Maltese  20 seconds behind Cilia, registering a new personal best by 2 minutes 30 seconds, over last year’s race.

Contacted after the race, Galea said that he is very happy with his performance. He was not expecting such a fast time as the race was actually part of his training schedule. His improvement over last year, confirms his progress in view of his forthcoming commitments, particularly in triathlon.

However his disappointment at losing first Maltese placing by a mere 20 seconds, was evident.  He attributed his missing this target due to his triathlon training and not peaking for the race.  This reflected mainly in his lack to react to the winner’s final assault.  He congratulated his opponent on his deserved victory.
