BIRKIRKARA ST JOSEPH AT TA’ QALI NATIONAL STADIUM’S INAUGURAL MATCH

My attention has recently been drawn to an article published in a local Maltese language newspaper, under the heading “30 Sena ta’ Futbol fl-Istadium f’Ta’ Qali”, wherein it was stated that the first couple of teams to grace the lush green turf of the National Stadium were Zurrieq and Senglea on the 6th December 1981, giving the impression that following its completion this stadium was transferred to the Malta Football Association.

Unfortunately, this journalist got the records wrong.  Construction work on the National Stadium was finished in time to host the final of the first ever national football championships organised by the now defunct Malta Football Federation, which was held on Sunday, 3 May 1981.  Following the semi-finals of these championships played at the Marsa stadium, the two teams to walk out proudly for the first time ever on the green of Ta’ Qali were Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club and Valletta Vanguards Football Club on a windy afternoon on Sunday, 3rd May 1981, in front of a packed enclosure.  The Vanguards of Valletta had to battle hard to breakdown a well-organised Birkirkara St. Joseph formation, assisted in their victory by a freak Alex Gollcher own goal in the first 15 minutes of the match. Lining up for the Yellow/Blues of Valletta for this final was Mr. N. Darmanin Demajo, currently at the helm of the Malta Football Association.  The Saints were beaten 2-1.

Furthermore, at the time, the Malta Football Association (called Main Football Association) did not play its competitions at the Marsa Stadium and the Ta’ Qali National Stadium. This to put the records right.

Hereunder are links to newspaper cuttings relating to the semi-final and final mentioned above.
