Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club made an early exit in the Inter Amateur Soccer Competition Knock-Out 2012, with a 5-2 drubbing by fellow second division contenders Luqa Juniors. Although the early indications of the match were quite promising, the Saints failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage and were trapped into literally playing in their opponents hands.

Taking an early advantage through a beautiful Matthew Scerri goal (picture),  after playing some good  football,  the Saints’  overconfidence cost  them dearly, as the Juniors defended intelligently and countered with speed  and lethally, forcing the rather slow  back-four to concede  one  mistake after another, and converting these  mistakes into goals.

In the second half the Yellows pulled a goal back at 3-2, following a melee in their opponents’ penalty area, during which Steve Caruana managed to pot the ball in.  However all hopes of a revival were trashed as the boys in Blue scored again moments later.  Heroics by the Luqa Juniors goalkeeper added frustration to the Saints, who attacked from  all sides, leaving their rearguard wide  open at the mercy of the Luqa frontrunners, who added another  to their tally five minutes from the  end.
